Q&A with the Artist
How’d you get started with art?
When I was little, my life plan was to live by the ocean with my dog, and paint. I said “the nice people would give me food.” As I got older, I abandoned that dream to pursue a corporate career. After experiencing a traumatic series of events in 2021, my artistic side demanded a permanent role in my life.
Art was my saving grace during that period - my meditation, my peace. And it helped to bring me out of a dark place. Now, through the encouragement of friends and family, I have begun exhibiting my art at local Minneapolis markets and online.
What kind of artwork do you make?
Art made with love and lots of color. I gravitate towards vibrant, textured, fluid styles. I love combining materials like resin, polymer clay and acrylic paint, and creating art that has 3D elements. I love trees, drips and water, and the straight lines of architecture. I also dabble in epoxy resin décor, including trinket dishes, coasters, decorative plates and LED lights.
Why “BlueKiwi”?
BlueKiwi68 was my very first screen name. It was 2001 and I had just discovered the exciting world of chatrooms on AIM. Remember those days? a/s/l, away messages, the sound of a door opening when your crush signed on.
When I first began sharing my art in 2021, I wasn’t comfortable associating my art with my real name. Since then, I’ve come around to the idea… Hi, my name’s Leila, nice to meet you. But “Blue Kiwi” will continue exist alongside!
Do you make custom art?
Of course! My best work is when I’m creating something for someone. If you see a sold piece that really spoke to you or have an idea for a piece you’d like, submit my Commissions Request form.
